Via digg, I came across „ The 5 Books that Every Programmer Should Read” by Shane Sherman. I don’t agree with his selection on all points. IMHO, Joel Spolsky’s list would fit my preferences better. I especially like this comment: I think that this book, universally known as K&R , is THE book anyone who wants to be a programmer must learn first. Pick it up and work through it in detail. If you love every minute of it, you can be a programmer. If you find this old-school text programming stuff boring, or the pointer stuff drives you crazy, trust me, you’re not going to like programming very much. In Hollabrunn ist der Peppi ins Gymnasium gegangen, dann hat er auf der Boku studiert, später ist er als Referent zum Bauernbund gewechselt. Als Finanzgenie ist der Peppi dabei nicht aufgefallen.

Y! hat am 26. Oktober diesen Jahres ein Patent eingereicht, dass Tags (metadata) für Bilder (images), Videos (video images) und Audio-Daten (audio media object) sowie die Software, mittels derer man diese Inhalte taggen kann, abdeckt. Das Patent erstreckt sich auf den gesamten Prozess des Tagges sowie der danach möglichen Zusammenstellung und Suche von/nach Inhalten gemäßt der vergebenen Metadaten. Der Grund, warum ich mich wieder einmal zu dem Thema DRM auslasse ist eine nette Geschäftsidee aus den USA, die an diversen konsumentenfeindlichen Richtlinien und Gesetzen scheitert. Die Firma „ Load ‘N Go Video” hat iPods verkauft, auf denen bereits Filme aufgespielt waren. Selbstverständlich hat das Unternehmen seinen Kunden nicht nur den iPod, sondern auch die DVDs der aufgespielten Filme verkauft – man will ja schließlich nichts Illegales tun. Nur leider hat das Unternehmen den DMCA und die Interessenvertretung der Filmstudios, MPAA, vergessen. In der Klage „Paramount Pictures v. Load ‘N Go Video” wird das Unternehmen nun angeklagt, weil das Rippen von DVD gemäß DCMA (in der EU gemäß der Informations-Richtline) verboten ist. Und die Musik-/Filmindustrie mag das nicht, weil sie es natürlich viel lieber sieht, wenn man sich den Film, den man sowieso schon daheim auf DVD hat, nochmals kauft, um ihn am iPod bzw. Zune, Zen, … anzusehen. Und jetzt sprechen mir alle nach: DRM ist schlecht für den Kunden oder DRM is bad for the customer! Du findest den kompletten Text in m³s online Pamphlet.

As Mr Mitchell was planning to run the Linux open source operating system on the machine, he had no need for the copy of Windows XP Home that had been pre-installed.
When he started it for the first time, he clicked the box that said "no" on the Windows licence agreement that asked him to agree to its terms. The text of this agreement states users can get a refund for the "unused products" on their new computer if they get in touch with the machine's manufacturer.

Warner Home Video (WHV) and Warner Bros. Television (WBTV) have announced the start of production of "Babylon 5: The Lost Tales", a made-for-video movie that will be targeted towards the Babylon 5 loyal audience and science-fiction fans in general.

WHV will be the home entertainment distributor for this made-for-DVD release which will include two new Babylon 5 stories collectively entitled "Voices of the Dark" in one film plus exclusive behind the scenes content. Das Problem sieht der bei Red Hat beschäftigte Programmierer vor allem in der Verallgemeinerung: So könne man Projekte wie den Linux-Kernel nicht mit den Massen an Open-Source-Projekten vergleichen, die sich bei Sourceforge fänden. Von hoher Qualität könne man daher nur bei einigen Projekten sprechen und das seien die, die gute Programmierer haben und ihren Quellcode sorgfältig überprüfen würden. Amen. Der Vorteil von Open Source ist IMHO allerdings der, dass man a) den Code selber beurteilen (lassen) kann und b) eventuelle Fehler auch selber ausbessern kann und nicht auf einen neuen Release warten muss.
