Der Verein für Konsumenteninformation (VKI) hat im Auftrag der Arbeiterkammer (AK) neun gängige Online-Musikanbieter getestet. Wider meinen Erwartungen ist der Test durchaus gelungen und praxisnah, auch wenn sich mir bei manchen „allgemein verständlichen” Formulierungen die Zehennägel aufrollen.

Bei SPÖ und ÖVP war man ja übers Wochenende schon ganz fleißig am Säubern, all die Pfui-gack-Gschichten aus dem Napalm-Wahlkampf raustun, war ja doch ein sauberer Wahlkampf. Aber wer säubert eigentlich YouToube von diesen garschtigen Videos, können wir das klären bevor wir uns dem Eurofighter und anderen Kleinigkeiten widmen?

Abseits der üblichen Big Brother Awards Kategorien „Business und Finanzen”, „Politik”, „Behörden und Verwaltung”, „Kommunikation”, „Lebenswerk” und „Öffentliche Volkswahl” hat die Jury heuer entschieden auch einen Sonderpreis für besonders idiotische Überwachungsmethoden und -maßnahmen zu vergeben.
Der erstmals verliehene Preis „Pro-Stupiditate” geht an Brigitte Ederer, Chefin von Siemens Österreich, für die dümmste Ausrede.

Im European Telecom Standards Institute [ETSI] hat das zuständige technische Komitee "Lawful Interception" ["gesetzmäßige Überwachung"] die Vorgaben aus Brüssel bereits weitgehend umgesetzt.

Warum man im European Telecom Standards Institute, das ähnlich wie das Europäische Patentamt keine EU-Institution ist, der Zeit etwas voraus ist, erklärt ein Blick auf die Zusammensetzung der Arbeitsgruppen selbst.
Neben den großen Telekom-Ausrüstern wie Siemens, Nokia und Ericsson bzw. Cisco für das Internet sind im Fall des Standards für "Data-Retention" auch die israelischen "Spezialfirmen" Verint und Nice unter den Sponsoren aufgeführt. Als weitere Unterstützer fungieren das britische Innenministerium und die mit dem militärisch-elektronischen Komplex der USA eng verbandelte Firma Verisign.

Das Problem sieht der bei Red Hat beschäftigte Programmierer vor allem in der Verallgemeinerung: So könne man Projekte wie den Linux-Kernel nicht mit den Massen an Open-Source-Projekten vergleichen, die sich bei Sourceforge fänden. Von hoher Qualität könne man daher nur bei einigen Projekten sprechen und das seien die, die gute Programmierer haben und ihren Quellcode sorgfältig überprüfen würden. Amen.
Der Vorteil von Open Source ist IMHO allerdings der, dass man a) den Code selber beurteilen (lassen) kann und b) eventuelle Fehler auch selber ausbessern kann und nicht auf einen neuen Release warten muss.

Warner Home Video (WHV) and Warner Bros. Television (WBTV) have announced the start of production of "Babylon 5: The Lost Tales", a made-for-video movie that will be targeted towards the Babylon 5 loyal audience and science-fiction fans in general.

WHV will be the home entertainment distributor for this made-for-DVD release which will include two new Babylon 5 stories collectively entitled "Voices of the Dark" in one film plus exclusive behind the scenes content. As Mr Mitchell was planning to run the Linux open source operating system on the machine, he had no need for the copy of Windows XP Home that had been pre-installed.
When he started it for the first time, he clicked the box that said "no" on the Windows licence agreement that asked him to agree to its terms. The text of this agreement states users can get a refund for the "unused products" on their new computer if they get in touch with the machine's manufacturer.

Die Albertina zeigt Andy Warhol: Ab 24. November 2006 werden rund 60 Arbeiten auf Papier präsentiert. Als Premiere kann diese Ausstellung bezeichnet werden, stammt doch die Hälfte dieser Blätter direkt von der knapp nach Warhols Tod ins Leben gerufenen und vom Künstler testamentarisch verfügten „The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts“ in New York. Dank der engen Zusammenarbeit mit der New Yorker Warhol-Foundation und der großzügigen Unterstützung durch Privatleihgeber ist es gelungen, eine wahrhaft glamouröse Auswahl an Star-Porträts zusammenzutragen.

With £174 worth of sniffer hardware, attackers can read all the personal information off of any of the three million new UK passports in circulation -- and if combined with demonstrated hacks for reading RFIDs at a distance, this could happen from across the room, or even farther.
