My Thinkpad doesn't love me any more
Submitted by m3 on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 - 16:50   Software
My Thinkpad T42p (2668-Q1) doesn’t love me any more. More detailed: the ThinkVantage Access Connections tool just won’t talk to the built in Intel 2200BG Wireless card any more. Unfortunately I can’t pinpoint the exact cause of this problem any more. I can remember, that I updateed Access Connections (AC) from 4.11 to 4.12, and did not reboot. After that, I connected a new cell phone via bluetooth (more drivers installed) and a while after that I rebooted and wham - no WLAN any more.

 Tips for Podcasters
Submitted by m3 on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 - 12:39   Personal
Dear podcasters, dear interviewee,

as I listened to several podcasts in the last view days, I would like to give you the following tips:
  • Turn OFF all cell phones. Switching your cell phone to vibrate won’t help, you can still hear that in the podcast.
  • Turn of your system sounds. Your listeners do not want to hear your new mail notification, etc.
  • Turn of your PDA(s). Your listeners do not want to hear your reminder sounds, etc.
  • Get a Pop Screen. Really. I mean it. Either buy one, or build it yourself. It will make your recording more understandable. Believe me.
  • Use a wind shield if the microphone is right in front of your mouth (headset). There is not much that is more annoying than the constant breathing noises in the podcast.
Thanks!

m³ and his Thinkpad - reconciled again
Submitted by m3 on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 - 14:22   Software
Yesterday, I described my problem, that Lenovos ThinkVantage tool Access Connections Version 4.12 could not turn my Intel 2200 BG wireless card on or off. In fact, these two couldn’t communicate with each other at all. After much thinking and trial and error I finally found a solution in one of the Thinkpad-forums.

Land of the free? Sounds more like "land of the paranoid"
Submitted by m3 on Thursday, May 25, 2006 - 23:56   Disobey
This story by C|Net is another bit of information that lets my image of the USA as the „land of the free” crumble. How free can you be, if you are not allowed to use the hard- and software you choose. This sounds a lot like France, but with a different motivation.

EU software patents: could you eventually find one position?
Submitted by m3 on Sunday, May 28, 2006 - 16:42   Disobey
European Commission (July, 2005):
„The Commission maintains that, without the directive, patents on computerised inventions will continue being granted by national offices and the European Patent Office,” said the Commission in a statement. „It [the EPO] does not grant ‘software patents’ — computer programs per se, algorithms or computer-implemented business methods — that make no technical contribution,” said the EC.
European Commission (Mai, 2006):
Moreover, with respect to the particular cases mentioned by the Honourable Member, the draft Community patent Regulation confirms in its Article 28.1(a) that patents granted for a subject matter (such as computer programs), which is excluded from patentability pursuant to Article 52 EPC, may be invalidated in a relevant court proceeding.

RFID chips for migrant workers in the US?
Submitted by m3 on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - 22:25   Disobey
VeriChip chairman Scott Silverman's appearance on American TV this week has raised fears of the introduction of RFID technology.

According to RNIF, he "bandied about the idea of chipping foreigners on national television Tuesday".

RINF said Silverman appeared to be emboldened by the Bush Administration call to know "who is in our country and why they are here". He told Fox & Friends that the VeriChip could be used to register guest workers, verify their identities as they cross the border, and "be used for enforcement purposes at the employer level". He added: "We have talked to many people in Washington about using it..."

iCalendar Daten für das Donauinselfest 2006
Submitted by m3 on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 19:15   Events

Submitted by Lotussteve on Tuesday, July 04, 2006 - 17:48   Cargal
Hallo Leute!
