Hallo zusammen!
Was lange währt wird endlich.....aber lassen wir das :) !
Es wird jetzt langsam ernst mit dem Wechsel von CARGAL auf eine neue, virtuelle Umgebung und damit auch Anhebung unseres Softwarestandes auf LENNY und später, wenn PLESK das kann, auf SQUEEZE.
Nach einer Kontrolle daß in LENNY(-BACKPORTS) alle Komponenten vorhanden sind die wir für eine Migration brauchen schaut mein Plan wie folgt aus:

Debian 4.0 delivers support for encrypted partitions out-of-the box and a package management system called Secure APT that verifies packages downloaded from mirror sites.
There's also support for Linux Standard Base (LSB) 3.1, from the Linux Foundation for improved interoperability of applications across different Linux distributions. Among other changes are updates to a shopping list of software packages, the latest editions of open source bread-and-butter software including PostgresSQL, MySQL, Apache, Samba, and Perl and Python, and support for eleven processor architectures.

HP erweitert den Support für Open Source und unterstützt jetzt neben Red Hat, Novell und einer Reihe kleinerer Linux-Distributionen auch Debian. Mit der Auslieferung seiner HP ProLiant und HP BladeSystem Server unter Debian Linux, setzt HP die seit 1995 bestehende Zusammenarbeit mit dem Open Source-Spezialisten fort. Zudem stellt der Anbieter nun auch dem Channel in Deutschland integrierte, Open Source-basierte Middleware-Lösungen bereit.

Two hot issues are making the rounds. First, Debian and Firefox are having a spat, and the end result may be that Debian will distribute Firefox under a different name. Second, the war betwen Linus Torvalds and other Kernel developers and the Free Software Foundation over GPLv3 is continuing, with Torvalds saying he's fed up with the FSF.

Specifically, Garrett's announcement on his blog cites a lack of civility and a slowness in decision-making, and compares Debian unfavorably to Ubuntu, the Debian-derived distribution which is increasingly attracting the efforts of many Debian maintainers. Note to self: The order in which you enter modules for NICs into the file /etc/modules matters. If you do not think about that, you will wonder why there is no outgoing traffic, etc. The NIC-devices are numbered in order of appearance.

Nun war es endlich soweit, eine Installation von Debian GNU/Linux (Sid) auf meinem, nun nicht mehr nagelneuen, ACER Travelmate 290LMI.
Anfangs scheute ich mich etwas vor einer Linuxinstallation wegen mangelnden Treibern für WLAN und weil ich auch Speedstep noch nicht im Kernel vermutete.
Mit dem 2.6er Kernel war zumindest Speedstep und ACPI gelöst.
Um es noch einmal zu betonen, ich verwende auf meinem Notebook Debian/Sid (unstable), konnte bis jetzt aber keine Abstürze verzeichnen.

Das ist eine der besch... Fehlermeldungen, die ich in meiner Karriere gesehen habe. Zu Gesicht bekommt man diese, wenn man Debian Sarge in einer UML (User-Mode Linux) Partition laufen lässt. Beim Setup und bei jedem Update der glibc stößt man auf diese Fehlermeldung -- da die Native POSIX Thread Library (NPTL) unter UML nicht unterstützt wird -- und dann geht nichts mehr, bis ...

Hab grade einen sehr interessanten Artikel auf debianplanet.com gefunden, in dem beschrieben wird, wie man mit sehr einfachen Schritten, optimierte, also auf die jeweilige Architektur angepasste, Debian Pakete mittels apt-build erstellt. Hab eben Firefox kompiliert und er startet wirklich schneller :)
